This 2-hour training, presented in two 1-hour sections, is presented from the specialized perspective of providing clinical services to youth with multiply-occurring needs, including co-occurring mental health and substance use needs. Nearly a decade ago, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) released the updated 3rd edition of the popular ASAM ‘Patient Placement Criteria’. Renamed The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, the 3rd edition aims to de-emphasize the focus on the notion of ‘placement’ and emphasize individualized and clinically-driven decisions regarding treatment. Described in the preface of the 3rd edition, the general purpose of the comprehensive guidelines are to ‘enhance the use of multidimensional assessments to develop patient-centered service plans and to guide…objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer discharge for various levels of care for addictive, substance-related and co-occurring conditions’. Centered on six areas of dimensional assessment, the ASAM has paid particular attention to the special needs associated with adolescents and the expectations of co-occurring conditions. Many clinical providers that include any addiction services are now required to assess client level of care using ASAM criteria as part of treatment matching recommendations at admission, continued stay, and termination for those with identified substance use needs. Even without requirements for ASAM inclusion, the guided assessment and conceptualization process is very useful for increasing integrated and matched-care decisions.
