Using Motivational Interviewing & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Address Gambling Disorder

When working with clients who are experiencing problems with gambling, it is vital to consider multiple approaches when formulating treatment plans. What may work well with one client, may not have the same impact with another, so creating a toolbox of modalities can be very beneficial. This training will allow clinicians to further explore the evidence-based practices of Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as ways to treat gambling disorder.

The training will emphasize the application of MI principles, including empathy, exploring ambivalence, and eliciting change talk to build rapport and enhance client motivation for change regarding their gambling behavior. Participants will also explore key CBT techniques, such as identifying and challenging irrational thoughts about gambling (e.g., the gamblers fallacy), developing problem-solving and social skills, and implementing relapse prevention strategies tailored for gambling addiction.

The training will utilize interactive exercises, case examples, and discussion to equip participants with the skills needed to more effectively utilize both MI and CBT to help individuals understand and address their gambling disorder, and to develop healthier coping mechanisms and decision-making skills, ultimately fostering long-term recovery.
