Online Gambling & Sports Wagering
In October 2017 a major gambling expansion bill was passed in Pennsylvania, allowing for the possibility of more legalized gambling than ever before. Over the past several years, we have seen the launch of multiple new types of gambling, including online gambling and sports wagering, which has resulted in a dramatic increase in availability and participation.
It is vital for treatment and prevention professionals to not only be aware of the current trends of gambling participation to better serve those they work with, but also to have a better understanding of the activities that may lead to new problems, as well as resources that are currently available in PA.
This session will include discussion about the challenges of new and advancing opportunities to bet on sports, the risks of online gambling and sports wagering, and how counseling can assist those who are struggling.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:
- Become familiar with gambling and some of the factors included in the development of problematic gambling
- Become familiar with how online gambling and sports wagering have expanded in Pennsylvania
- Discuss the potential impact of expanded gambling on individuals who participate
- Identify protections that have been included in legislated gambling
- Have awareness of available local resources
